50 After 50: Savannah, Georgia

savannah

About six years ago I was a middle-aged adult who had never seen the ocean.  Oh, I did visit the Gulf from Panama City Beach in high school with a friend’s family. As a child, my family just didn’t go on vacation.  With our own young family, the budget never stretched to the beach and we truly just were not ‘water people’. We camped, went to the mountains, visited family. But the idea of seeing the ocean .. seemed necessary!

Most of our ideas come from other people. Bill is one of those people. He cuts my hair and tells stories and he shared with me about his family going to Savannah, GA. It sounded like an amazing city — and a place that was within reach. Ideas breed desire.. and I found myself choosing a trip to Savannah when given the chance for a long weekend.

Savannah, GA is indeed an amazing city.. a place where history has been preserved well. With just a long weekend, we chose the Old Town Trolley Tour to explore the square designs of this remarkable city.

The Riverwalk, Pirates House, Cigar shops, and the size of the ocean liners arriving with cargo was fascinating to my eyes.

A trip to Fort Pulaski is a must for any history buff and, of course, you can’t miss Tybee Island!  That’s where I saw the ocean for the first time. It was a cool, cloudy April day.

Since that day almost six years ago, I’ve stood on the shores of Maine, the coast of California and Oregon.  Who knew?
